The Costa Verde

The coast of Asturias is called the Costa Verde, the green coast, and the name explains itself: green hills run down to sandy coves, fishing villages and long beaches facing the Bay of Biscay. Gijón, the largest city, has a broad city beach that changes completely with the tide, and Salinas, near Avilés, is one of the best-known surf beaches in the north of Spain, with its own surf cameras.

Snow an hour from the sea

Just inland, the Cantabrian Mountains rise to more than 2,000 m, and two small ski resorts sit within an hour or so of the coast. Fuentes de Invierno and Valgrande-Pajares are where Asturian families ski at weekends, and their cameras show whether the snow has arrived on the slopes while the beaches below are still green. Out of season the same cameras look over high meadows and walking country.

When to watch Asturias

Asturias is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. It lies far to the west in its time zone, so the sun sets late: on midsummer evenings it is still light after 10pm. The Atlantic brings mild summers, frequent showers and big tides, so check the sea as well as the sky before heading to the beach, and the forecast before driving up to the slopes.

What is on this page, and what is not

We only add a place when its cameras can be shown here. Many of the cameras on the Asturian coast, in Llanes, Ribadesella, Cudillero and Luarca, belong to networks that do not allow them to be shown on other websites, so those towns are missing for now.
