The Coast of Death

The Costa da Morte runs along the north-west corner of Galicia, from the beaches near Carballo to Cape Finisterre. It takes its name from the many ships wrecked on its rocks: this is open Atlantic, with no shelter from the west, and the winter storms here are among the strongest on the European coast. In summer it is a coast of long, empty beaches, granite headlands and small fishing harbours, far quieter than the Rías Baixas to the south.

Finisterre and Muxía, the end of the Camino

For centuries Cape Finisterre was thought to be the western end of the world, and many pilgrims still walk on from Santiago to the lighthouse on the cape, about 90 km further west, to watch the sun set over the ocean. Muxía, just to the north, is the other end of that walk: its shrine of the Virxe da Barca stands on the rocks at the water's edge. The cameras look at the lighthouse, the shrine and the village.

Camariñas, Razo and Baldaio

Camariñas is a fishing village known for its bobbin lace and for the lighthouse at Cabo Vilán, and its camera looks over the harbour. At the eastern end of the coast, Razo and Baldaio are long open beaches with some of the most consistent surf in Galicia; the Carballo town council runs cameras on both, and they are the ones to check for the size of the waves.

When to watch the Costa da Morte

Galicia is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland, and this is its westernmost corner, so the sun sets later here than almost anywhere else in mainland Spain. On clear evenings the cameras at Finisterre and Muxía catch the sunset over the Atlantic. The weather changes fast with the wind, so look at the sea before setting off along the coast or out on the water.
