Fuerteventura's beaches on camera

Fuerteventura is the island of beaches: the closest of the Canaries to Africa, long, dry and windswept, and famous above all for its sand. Its two coasts are very different, and the webcams show both. On the sheltered south-east side, at the foot of the Jandía mountains, a camera looks over the anchored yachts in the bay of Morro Jable, another watches the 59-metre lighthouse, the tallest in the islands, and a third follows the long golden sands of Playa del Matorral at Jandía. Further north on the same coast, a water-sports school at Costa Calma watches the windsurfers and wing-foilers off Matas Blancas beach. On the wild west coast, a surf school at La Pared streams the waves live, and in the north-west a camera in El Cotillo looks past the old Tostón watchtower down a coast of beaches and cliffs.

Some of the cameras stream live video; others are shared on Windy and keep a time-lapse of the past 24 hours, which is handy for seeing how the weather has turned through the day.

When to watch the Fuerteventura webcams

The island keeps the same time as the UK and Ireland all year, an hour behind mainland Spain. The north-east trade wind blows most steadily in summer, which suits windsurfers and kitesurfers; winter brings the big Atlantic swells to the west coast, when La Pared and El Cotillo are at their most dramatic. The west-facing cameras are the ones to watch at sunset.
