Santiago and its cathedral

Most British and Irish visitors come to Galicia for Santiago de Compostela, and the city has more cameras than anywhere else in the region: on the Praza do Obradoiro in front of the cathedral, where pilgrims arrive at the end of the Camino; on the Quintana and Praterías squares beside it; and inside the cathedral itself, on the transept where the botafumeiro swings and on the high altar, broadcast with sound. Another camera looks over the rooftops of the old town from San Lázaro.

The last stages of the Camino

The cameras follow the French Way into Galicia. O Cebreiro is the mountain village where the Camino crosses into Galicia, with its old round stone houses and the pilgrims' hostel; Portomarín is the town that was moved uphill, church and all, when the Belesar reservoir flooded the valley in the 1960s. From Sarria, a little before Portomarín, it is about 100 km to Santiago, the minimum distance walkers need to cover for the Compostela certificate.

Lugo, Ourense and the Ribeira Sacra

Lugo is the only city in the world still ringed by complete Roman walls, a World Heritage Site that can be walked all the way round. Ourense, on the Miño, is famous for its hot springs, some of them free and open-air by the river. Between the two, the Sil and the Miño have cut the deep canyons of the Ribeira Sacra, where vineyards climb terraces so steep that the grapes are picked by hand and carried up in baskets. To the south-east, Manzaneda is Galicia's only ski resort.

When to watch inland Galicia

Galicia is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. Inland the climate is more extreme than on the coast: hotter summer afternoons in Ourense and the canyons, frost and fog on winter mornings, and snow on O Cebreiro and Manzaneda in winter. Mass at the cathedral and the botafumeiro have their own schedule, so the cameras inside are worth checking at service times.
