Tenerife's holiday coast on camera

Almost every British and Irish holiday in Tenerife is spent on the south of the island, and that is where these webcams are. Mount Teide and the mountains around it shelter this side from the north-east trade winds, which keep the north green and cloudy; the south is drier, sunnier and warmer, which is why the resorts grew here from the 1960s onwards. The cameras follow the coast from Playa Paraíso, where the hotels sit on lava cliffs facing west towards La Gomera, past the beaches and the Puerto Colón marina of Costa Adeje, round to Los Cristianos and Las Américas, then east past the marina at Golf del Sur to El Médano, the town of sand dunes and steady wind just below Tenerife South airport.

Most of them belong to the people who live and work beside them: a hotel, a surf shop, a marina. The live cameras show the beach, the pools and the sea as they are now; others, shared on Windy, keep a time-lapse of the past 24 hours.

When to watch the Tenerife webcams

The Canary Islands keep the same time as the UK and Ireland all year round, one hour behind mainland Spain, so what you see on the cameras is happening at the same hour as at home. Winter days in the south usually reach the low 20s °C, which makes the webcams a cheering sight on a grey January morning. The west-facing coast is the place for sunsets; the south-east, around El Médano and Golf del Sur, catches the sunrise and the strongest wind.
