A city on the sea and a coast of sand

Valencia, Spain's third city, has its beaches a tram ride from the centre: they run north from the port past Malvarrosa to Alboraia and the marina village of Port Saplaya. South of the city lies L'Albufera, a freshwater lagoon among rice fields that is the home of paella. Beyond it the coast of La Safor is an almost straight line of fine sand and dunes for miles, with Gandia as its busy resort and quieter beach villages such as Tavernes de la Valldigna and Piles. Behind them, orange groves run up to the mountains, which the cameras often show on the horizon.

Who runs the cameras

Many of these cameras belong to the Valencian regional tourist board and reach this site through Windy, which shows the latest picture and a time-lapse of the day: the beach at Alboraia, Piles beach and, in the city itself, the Plaça de l'Ajuntament, the square in front of the City Hall, for the weather and the bustle of the centre. In Tavernes the camera comes from a network of local weather stations, and in Gandia a live stream on YouTube looks up Platja Nord from the start of the promenade by the harbour.

When to watch the Valencia coast

Mainland Spain is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland all year. This coast faces east, so the sun rises out of the sea and mornings are usually the calmest time on the beach. Autumn is the rainy season, when heavy downpours can arrive in a few hours and easterly winds pile the waves onto the open beaches. From June to September the sea is warm enough for a long swim.
