East along the whole beach, past the beach huts and the lifeguard post. What you see

Son Bou, on the south coast of Menorca, is the longest beach on the island: about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) of pale sand backed by dunes and a wetland, with a small resort at its western end. Four cameras of SOCIB, the Balearic coastal observatory, look at it from different angles, with a new image every hour.

What you can see on the Son Bou webcams

The cameras stand at the western end of the beach. One looks east along the whole length of the sand, past the beach huts and the lifeguard post; one faces straight out to sea over the dunes; one looks west to the cliffs and the beach bar; and one, further back, takes in the beach and the pine-covered hills around it. Together they show the waves, the colour of the water and how busy the beach is.

Son Bou webcam: the beach looking east

Looking east along the beach from the western end, this camera shows Son Bou at its longest: the pale sand curving away into the distance, the line of white water where the waves break, and the dunes and green scrub behind the beach. In the foreground are the white beach huts and the lifeguard post, with the walkways leading down to the sand.

It is the best of the four for the size of the waves and the colour of the water along the whole beach.

Son Bou webcam: the beach head-on

This camera faces straight out to sea over the dunes, with a lifeguard tower and its flag on the sand in front and the beach huts on the right. It is the closest view of the shore: how far the waves run up the sand, how strong the swell is and, in summer, the colour of the lifeguards' flag.

Son Bou webcam: the beach looking west

Looking west, this camera shows the end of the beach under the cliffs, where the sand narrows below the rocky headland and the beach bar stands near the water. Sunshades and loungers line the sand in season, and the swell rolls in towards the rocks.

Son Bou webcam: the whole beach from afar

From further back, this camera takes in the whole of Son Bou: the long strip of sand, the dunes and pine-covered hills behind it and the coast running away to the east. It is the view for the shape of the day, sunshine or cloud over the whole beach.

Dunes, wetland and an early Christian basilica

Behind the beach lie the dunes and the reedbeds of the Prat de Son Bou, one of the largest wetlands in Menorca. At the eastern end, by the shore, are the remains of an early Christian basilica from around the 5th or 6th century, one of the oldest churches on the island. The whole of Menorca has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993.

When to watch Son Bou

Menorca is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. The beach faces south, so it gets the sun all day, and it is open to swell from the south and south-west, which is when the cameras show the white water. The images are a scientific record and are renewed once an hour, so they show how the day is going rather than the moment.

Getting to Son Bou

Son Bou is in the municipality of Alaior, about 15 miles (25 km) from Mahón and Menorca Airport, by the main road across the island and then down to the south coast.
