Down Carrer la Mar beach from near the Illeta dels Banyets, towards Alicante's Cap de l'Horta; still images. What you see

El Campello is a fishing town turned family resort just north of Alicante, with a long sandy beach, a busy little harbour and a rocky islet covered in the remains of thousands of years of settlement. It is quieter than Benidorm and close enough to the city to feel lived-in all year.

What you can see on the El Campello webcam

The camera stands on the seafront at the northern end of Carrer la Mar, the town's main beach, and looks south-west down the long sweep of sand. The beach fills the foreground, breakwaters reach out into the shallow bay, the apartment blocks of the seafront line the right-hand side and the low headland of the Cap de l'Horta, on the edge of Alicante, closes the horizon. It sends still images through the day, with a 24-hour playback.

El Campello beach webcam: Carrer la Mar

From the seafront at the northern end of Carrer la Mar, close to the Illeta dels Banyets, this camera looks south-west down El Campello's main beach. The sand fills the foreground, often raked into smooth arcs early in the day; breakwaters run out into the shallow bay, the apartment blocks of the seafront line the right-hand side, and the low headland of the Cap de l'Horta, near Alicante, closes the horizon.

It sends still images through the day, with a 24-hour playback, so it is best for checking the sky, the colour of the sea and how many parasols are already up on the sand.

L'Illeta dels Banyets

Right next to the camera, a small rocky peninsula holds one of the most important archaeological sites on the Costa Blanca. People lived on L'Illeta dels Banyets from the Bronze Age, and the Iberians built a town here with temples and warehouses; the small pools cut into the rock, thought to be Roman fish tanks, are the "little baths" that gave the place its name. A 16th-century watchtower, built to look out for pirates, stands above the harbour nearby. The site has paths and information panels and is open to visitors.

When to watch El Campello

El Campello is one hour ahead of the UK. The beach faces south-east, so the morning sun shines straight across the water towards the camera and the light is clearest from late morning. Early in the day the sand is often freshly raked into neat arcs before the first towels arrive; in summer it fills by midday. The sea is about 14 °C in late winter and around 26 °C in August.

Around El Campello

To the south, the beach continues as Muchavista and then the long Playa de San Juan of Alicante. To the north, the coast becomes rocky, with small coves for snorkelling. The fishing harbour has a fish market and a row of seafood restaurants on its quay.

Visiting El Campello

The TRAM runs along the coast from Alicante to El Campello and on to Benidorm, with several stops in the town, so the beach is easy to reach without a car. Alicante airport is about half an hour away by road.
