What you can see on the Jávea webcams
One camera, on the seafront of the port district, looks north along the promenade: the rock-armoured sea wall, the shingle crescent of La Grava beach with its palms, and the marina tucked under the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni. Another, set among palm trees near the Arenal, swings between the open sea and the rocky coast to the south. A third, on the hills above La Granadella, takes in the whole valley at once: the Montgó, the white town spread across the plain and the bay closed by Cap de Sant Antoni. All three send still images through the day, with a 24-hour playback that shows how the light and the sea have changed.
Jávea webcam: La Grava beach and the port
From the Casa del Cable, the old telegraph station on the seafront of Jávea's port district, this camera looks north along the promenade. In the foreground are the cycle lane and walkway, then a sea wall of large white boulders; beyond it, the shingle crescent of La Grava beach curves round under a line of palms to the marina and the harbour breakwater, beneath the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni.
It is a good view for reading the sea: when the wind blows onshore, waves break white against the boulders in front of the camera. It sends still images through the day, with a 24-hour playback.
Jávea webcam: the coast from the Arenal
Set high among palm trees near the Arenal, Jávea's sandy bay, this camera swings between the open sea and the coast to the south, where low rocky points and wooded hills run out towards the Cap de la Nau, with a tall block of flats on the right. The sand of the Arenal itself is mostly hidden by the palms.
The sun rises in front of it, so early images are often silhouettes against a glittering sea, and the coastline comes into focus later in the morning. On days with an easterly swell you can see the surf breaking white over the rocks. It sends still images, with a 24-hour playback.
Jávea from the Granadella hills: the Montgó, the town and the bay
The local weather website Meteo Xàbia keeps this camera on the heights above La Granadella, in the south of the municipality, and it looks north across the whole Jávea valley. Pine-covered slopes and villas fill the foreground, and behind them the white houses spread over the plain down to the sea. The Montgó rises on the left with its pale limestone cliffs facing the camera; on the right the bay curves round to the long, flat-topped headland of Cap de Sant Antoni, with a strip of open Mediterranean beyond it.
It is the only view that shows mountain, town and sea together, so it is the quickest way to see whether cloud is sitting on the Montgó or the whole bay is clear. It sends still images through the day, with a 24-hour playback.
A cable to Ibiza and a mountain called Montgó
The building that carries the port camera, the Casa del Cable, was the telegraph station where the undersea cable to Ibiza came ashore; today it is an exhibition hall. Jávea's capes are the nearest point of the mainland to Ibiza, and on very clear days the island can be seen from them. Behind the bay, the Montgó rises to 753 metres (about 2,470 ft) and, with the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni, is protected as a natural park, with a marine reserve below the cape.
When to watch Jávea
Jávea is one hour ahead of the UK. The bay opens to the east, so the morning sun comes straight off the sea: early images from the Arenal are often silhouettes, and the coast comes into focus by mid-morning. An easterly wind sends swell into the bay and lines of white water along the rocks below the port promenade. In winter the town is calm and the sea around 14 °C; in August it reaches about 26 °C.
Around Jávea
South of the Arenal, the coast breaks into coves and cliffs: the Granadella cove, the island of El Portitxol and the Cap de la Nau with its lighthouse. The old town has a fortified Gothic church and a busy covered market, and Dénia is on the far side of the Montgó.
Visiting Jávea
La Grava and most of the coves are shingle or rock; the Arenal is the sandy beach, gently shelving and good for children. Parking near the coves fills quickly in summer, so go early.
