Gandia is the biggest resort on the coast south of Valencia, a medieval town a couple of miles inland with a long, wide beach of golden sand on the sea. In summer its population grows several times over, mostly with families from Madrid, but British, French and German visitors have found it too.

What you can see on the Gandia webcams

The camera stands right at the edge of the sand, at the southern end of Platja Nord by the harbour, and looks north along the full length of the beach. The apartment blocks and hotels of the seafront run off to the left, the waves come in on the right, and on a clear day the mountain of Cullera rises on the horizon. It streams live video, and the same view is also shown as a time-lapse of the last 24 hours, handy for seeing how the morning went.

A wide-angle camera set low at Restaurante Ripoll, where the seafront promenade of Gandia begins beside the harbour breakwater and the yacht club. It looks north along Platja Nord, the town's long, gently sloping beach: the hotels and apartment blocks run off to the left, the sand and the lifeguard chairs fill the middle, and the waves come in from the right. On a clear day the mountain of Cullera closes the view on the horizon.

Being so close to the water line, it shows the sea as a swimmer will meet it: whether the waves are breaking or lapping, how far the wet sand reaches and how many people are already on the beach. It streams live video.

The town of the Borgias

Gandia's history is bound up with the Borja family, better known in English as the Borgias, who held the title of Duke of Gandia from the late fifteenth century. Their Ducal Palace stands in the old town, along with the Collegiate Basilica and the Convent of Santa Clara. The poet Ausiàs March, one of the great writers in the Valencian language, was born here.

When to watch Gandia

Platja Nord faces east, so the first light falls on the water and the beach is usually calmest in the early morning. Remember that mainland Spain is one hour ahead of the UK. Autumn is the rainy season on this coast, with most of the year's rain falling between September and November, so the camera is worth a look before planning a beach day then. In midsummer the sand fills up by late morning.

Around Gandia

To the south, Platja de l'Ahuir and the dunes beyond are much quieter. The Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba lies in the hills inland, and the Marjal de la Safor wetland, rich in birds, sits on the edge of town.

Visiting Gandia

Gandia is about 40 miles (65 km) south of Valencia, reached by the AP-7 motorway or the C1 commuter train from the city. The town and the beach are about a mile (2 km) apart, with buses between them. The beach is broad and shelves gently, which makes it popular with families.
