The reservoir from the lookout

From a lookout near the dam, across the lake to the hills and the sierras of the Axarquía. What you see

Lake Viñuela is the reservoir of La Viñuela, a broad blue lake set among the hills of the Axarquía, inland from Torre del Mar on the eastern Costa del Sol. Many British and Irish people have made their homes in the villages around it, and its webcam looks over the water from a lookout near the dam.

What you can see on the Lake Viñuela webcam

The camera looks north-west over the lake, with the dam's intake tower on the left, a road along the shore on the right and the hills and sierras beyond. It shows how full the reservoir is and what the weather is doing over the mountains, and plays as a time-lapse of the day.

Lake Viñuela webcam from the lookout by the dam

This camera looks north-west from a lookout above the reservoir of La Viñuela, the lake that English speakers in the Axarquía call Lake Viñuela. On the left a concrete intake tower stands in the water, joined to the shore by a narrow bridge, and a road bridge crosses the bottom corner; on the right a road curves along the shore through pines and scrub. The lake fills the middle of the view, with hills dotted with trees and white farmhouses beyond and the mountains of the Sierras de Tejeda and Alhama along the skyline. The shoreline shows how full the reservoir is, which matters here, because it supplies the towns of the Axarquía with water. The picture carries the copyright mark of meteomalaga.com and plays here as a time-lapse of the day.

A lake in the Axarquía

The reservoir was formed by damming the river Guaro, also called the Vélez, and gathers the water of several smaller rivers that run down from the mountains. It holds about 164 million cubic metres when full, covers some 565 hectares, and supplies the towns of the Axarquía, so its level is followed closely after dry winters. Around its shores there are picnic areas, walking trails and quiet country roads. Above it rise the Sierras de Tejeda and Almijara, whose highest peak, La Maroma, reaches 2,068 m (6,785 ft) and is the highest point of the Axarquía.

When to watch Lake Viñuela

La Viñuela is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. Winter and spring bring the rain that fills the lake, and after cold spells La Maroma can be white with snow. Summer days are hot and hazy; the camera's evening pictures, with the low sun on the hills, are often the prettiest.

Around Lake Viñuela

The village of La Viñuela sits just above the lake, and the white villages of the Axarquía, among them Periana, Alcaucín and Comares, are all within a short drive. Torre del Mar and the coast are about 10 miles (17 km) to the south.

Getting to Lake Viñuela

Málaga airport, with flights from all over the UK and Ireland, is about 40 miles (64 km) away by road, by way of the coast motorway and Vélez-Málaga.
