La Línea de la Concepción is the Spanish town on the sandy isthmus beside Gibraltar, and for many British visitors it is the way in and out of the Rock. It takes its name from the line of Spanish fortifications built across the isthmus during the 18th-century sieges of Gibraltar.

What you can see on the La Línea webcam

The camera looks out from a high window above Alcaidesa Marina and moves between views. Turned south, it shows the foot of the Rock, the runway of Gibraltar's airport and the apartment towers beyond; turned west, the pontoons and yachts of the marina, the seafront promenade and the Bay of Gibraltar with ships at anchor. Raindrops sometimes sit on the glass, but it is a quick way to see whether the famous Levanter cloud is hanging over the Rock.

La Línea webcam: Alcaidesa Marina and the Rock

High above Alcaidesa Marina in La Línea de la Concepción, this live camera looks out through a window and moves between two views. Facing south, it shows the seafront avenue and promenade below, the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar on the left, the runway of Gibraltar's airport running across the picture and the towers of Gibraltar's western side beyond. Facing west, it takes in the pontoons and yachts of the marina and the Bay of Gibraltar with cargo ships at anchor.

It is a good way to check the weather over the Rock, including the banner of cloud that the easterly wind often hangs on the summit, and to see how busy the bay is. Rain on the window can soften the picture after a shower.

Living next to the Rock

La Línea belonged to the municipality of San Roque until 1870, and its people have worked in Gibraltar since the days when the naval dockyard was the great employer. Spain closed the frontier in 1969; it partly reopened in 1982 and fully in 1985. The town still supplies Gibraltar with fresh produce and workers, and the two places share daily life in a way few borders do.

When to watch La Línea

Spain and Gibraltar keep the same time, one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland all year. The western face of the Rock is in shade in the early morning and catches the sun from midday, so afternoons give the clearest view. When the easterly levante blows, a banner of cloud often forms over the summit even on a sunny day.

Around La Línea

The frontier with Gibraltar is a short walk from the marina. Across the bay lie Algeciras and its port; along the eastern side of the isthmus, sandy beaches face the Mediterranean; and to the north-east, Sotogrande marks the start of the Costa del Sol.

Visiting La Línea

Crossing into Gibraltar depends on agreements between the UK, Spain and the EU, so check the current rules for passports and ID on official sites before you travel. Driving across can mean queues, and many visitors park in La Línea and walk over. Alcaidesa Marina has bars and restaurants along its quays with a direct view of the Rock.
