What you can see on the Alcossebre webcam
The camera looks out from a building above Playa Romana. Much of the frame is sky, which makes it a good weather camera: cloud building over the sea shows long before it arrives. Along the bottom runs the beach, curving away towards the white houses on the hillside and a harbour breakwater with a small lighthouse, with the open sea on the right. It streams live video, and the same view is also shown as a time-lapse of the last 24 hours.
Alcossebre beach webcam: Playa Romana
This camera belongs to Casa Azahar, a holiday rental agency, and looks out from a building above Playa Romana in Alcossebre. The frame is generous with the sky; along the bottom runs the beach, curving away to the left towards the white houses on the hillside and a harbour breakwater with a small lighthouse, while the open sea fills the right.
The large expanse of sky is no bad thing on a coast where the weather changes quickly: you can see cloud building or clearing long before it reaches the beach. Inland and to the north rise the hills of the Serra d'Irta, the protected coastline between Alcossebre and Peñíscola. It streams live video, though it can drop out for a while; its time-lapse of the last 24 hours follows it.
Freshwater springs in the sea
At the beach of Les Fonts, by the harbour, fresh water rises through the sand from the limestone of the Serra d'Irta, and you can feel the cold springs as you swim. The main beaches, Carregador, Romana, El Moro and Manyetes, are joined by smaller coves such as Tres Platges and Cala Blanca near the lighthouse. On clear days the Columbretes Islands are visible far out to sea.
When to watch Alcossebre
The coast faces east, so the morning sun comes in from the right of the picture and the bay glitters. Mainland Spain is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. Summer is busy but never crowded on the scale of the bigger resorts; spring and autumn bring quiet beaches and warm sea, still close to 20°C in October.
Around Alcossebre
The Serra d'Irta natural park runs north towards Peñíscola, with a coastal path past watchtowers and coves. The village of Alcalà de Xivert lies inland below the ruins of the Templar castle of Xivert.
Visiting Alcossebre
Alcossebre is about 80 miles (130 km) north of Valencia, off the AP-7 and the N-340; Alcalà de Xivert has a station on the Valencia to Barcelona line. Castellón airport is the nearest. The harbour is a base for kayaking, paddleboarding and diving trips along the Irta coast.
