Arguineguín is a working fishing town on the south coast of Gran Canaria that has grown into a quiet holiday base, with a harbour, a small beach and a seafront that runs west to the hotels of Patalavaca. Its name is usually said to come from the island's pre-Hispanic language and to mean "quiet water".

What you can see on the Arguineguín webcams

One view looks west along the seafront: a large seawater pool walled off from the ocean, the rocky shore beyond it, and in the distance the breakwater and buildings of Anfi del Mar under bare brown hills. It arrives as a time-lapse that covers the last day, so you can see how the morning turned out even if you check in the evening. The other looks back the opposite way, live, from the hillside above Anfi del Mar: the white sand and its sunbeds, yachts at anchor in the bay and the hotels of Patalavaca beyond. Together they show the state of the sea along this stretch, how sunny it is and how busy the beach is.

Anfi del Mar beach live, looking east towards Patalavaca

Anfi, the resort group whose holiday clubs line this beach, streams the camera from the hillside at the western end of Anfi del Mar, and it looks east across the whole bay. In the foreground the white sand curves round beneath rows of parasols and sunbeds, with colourful pedalos drawn up beside a short jetty; on the right lies the palm-covered island that holds the resort's marina, seen side-on. Sailing yachts ride at anchor in the middle of the bay, and beyond them the hotels and apartments of Patalavaca climb the bare brown hills, with the coast running on towards Arguineguín.

It is live video, the one to open for how busy the beach is, the colour of the shallows and whether the bay is flat or ruffled by the wind. Afternoon light, from behind the camera, gives the truest colours.

Arguineguín webcam: the seafront towards Patalavaca

This camera stands on the seafront between Arguineguín and Patalavaca and looks west along the coast. In the foreground is a large seawater pool, walled off from the ocean, with a paved terrace and parasols along its edge. Beyond it the rocky shore leads to a breakwater and to the hotels and apartments of Patalavaca and Anfi del Mar, with bare brown hills behind.

The open Atlantic fills the left of the picture. Morning light comes from behind the camera and gives the clearest view; towards evening it looks into the setting sun. It is shown as a time-lapse, and is the easiest way to see from home how calm the water is on this stretch of coast.

A fishing town first

Unlike the resorts built from scratch further east, Arguineguín was a fishing village before the tourists came, and the harbour is still the centre of town. Boats land their catch on the quay, and the restaurants around it are known for serving fish caught the same day. The town also holds one of the largest weekly street markets on the island, and it is part of the municipality of Mogán.

When to watch Arguineguín

The seafront view faces west, so mornings are lit from behind and give the clearest picture, and towards evening it looks into the setting sun, which can make for striking images in winter; the beach view faces east and is sharpest in the afternoon. The Canaries are on UK time, so morning on the screen is morning at home. With the mountains behind it, this part of the coast often stays sunny when cloud sits over the north of the island.

Around Arguineguín

Patalavaca and Anfi del Mar are a short stroll west along the seafront, and Puerto Rico is a few minutes further by car or bus. To the east are El Pajar and the long run of coast towards Meloneras and the Maspalomas dunes.

Visiting Arguineguín

The GC-1 motorway from the airport passes just inland of the town, and the coast road runs through the centre. The town beach is small and sheltered by the harbour, while the rocky shore along the seafront is better for looking at than for swimming.
