The old town and the cathedral

Source: 3Cat (CCMA)

High above the new town, east across the river to the old quarter, the cathedral and the bell tower of Sant Feliu, in a still photo with the weather. What you see

Girona is the capital of the Costa Brava's province and, for many British visitors, the airport they land at on the way to the beach. It deserves more than a glance from the coach window: a medieval city on a hill above the River Onyar, with painted houses leaning over the water, walls you can walk along and a cathedral at the top of a great flight of steps.

What you can see on the Girona webcam

The camera looks east from the newer part of the city towards the Barri Vell, the old quarter. The bell tower of the cathedral rises above the rooftops in the centre of the picture, with the slender Gothic spire of Sant Feliu beside it, while bridges, the railway viaduct and modern blocks fill the foreground. It is a still photo from Catalonia's public broadcaster, renewed through the day, with the temperature and humidity in the city.

Girona old town and its cathedral

From high on a building in the newer part of Girona, west of the river, this 3Cat weather camera looks east over the city to the old quarter on its hillside. Streets, a bridge and the railway viaduct run across the foreground, apartment blocks fill the middle, and above them stand the two great landmarks of the Barri Vell: the bell tower of the cathedral, crowned by a small dome, and to its left the tall Gothic spire of Sant Feliu. Wooded hills close the horizon.

The camera faces the morning sun, so early photos show the old town against a bright sky; by afternoon the stone of the cathedral is lit from the front. It is a still photo, renewed through the day, with the temperature and humidity at the camera.

The cathedral, the walls and the Jewish quarter

Girona Cathedral is reached by a Baroque staircase of 90 steps, and its single Gothic nave, about 23 m (75 ft) wide, is the widest of its kind in the world. Below it, the narrow lanes of the Call were home to one of the most important Jewish communities of medieval Catalonia. The city walls can be walked for much of their length, with views over the roofs to the Pyrenees on clear days. The old town has also stood in for other cities on screen, among them in the sixth series of Game of Thrones.

When to watch Girona

Girona is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. The camera faces east, so mornings are bright behind the old town and the afternoon light falls on the front of the cathedral. Summers are hot inland, often warmer than on the coast, and winter mornings can be frosty. In May the Temps de Flors festival fills courtyards, steps and churches with flowers.

Around Girona

The Costa Brava begins about 20 miles (35 km) to the east, with Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Platja d'Aro and Palamós the nearest resorts. Figueres and the Dalí museum are about half an hour north by train, and the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa lies to the north-west.

Visiting Girona

Girona-Costa Brava airport is about 8 mi (13 km) south-west of the city, with buses into the centre. High-speed trains reach Barcelona in about 40 minutes and France in under an hour. The old town is hilly and cobbled: comfortable shoes help.
