Palmanova bay from Son Maties

Across the bay of Palmanova and Torrenova from the rocks of Son Maties, with dozens of boats moored. What you see

Palmanova sits on the Calvià coast between Magaluf and Portals Nous, a string of small sandy beaches separated by low rocky points. Son Maties, at its western end, shares a wide bay with Torrenova, and on a calm day the water is dotted with yachts and motor boats at anchor. It is one of the longest-established family resorts on Majorca, and a favourite with British visitors.

What you can see on the Palmanova webcam

The view looks across the bay from a rocky point, over water that runs from pale green over sand to deep blue over the seagrass. Boats swing on their moorings in the middle of the picture, the hotels and apartments follow the shore, and the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Na Burguesa rise behind. It is a good camera for reading the sea: when the boats all point the same way and the surface is streaked with white, there is wind in the bay.

Moorings and hotels across Palmanova and Torrenova

From the rocks at the western end of Son Maties beach, this camera looks across the whole bay of Palmanova and Torrenova. Dozens of boats swing on their moorings in the foreground, the shoreline is lined with hotels and apartments, a large hotel stands on the sand at the far left, and the pine-clad hills of the Serra de Na Burguesa rise behind.

It is a camera for reading the sea rather than counting sunbeds. When the boats all point the same way, a breeze is blowing into the bay; when the water turns from turquoise to grey-blue streaked with white, conditions are choppy. In the late afternoon the sun lights the hills and the bay at its best.

A bay of boats

The shelter of this corner of the Bay of Palma makes it one of the favourite anchorages on the south-west coast. From late spring, day boats from Palma and Puerto Portals drop anchor here for lunch and a swim, and on summer weekends the bay can hold dozens of hulls. In winter it empties, and the camera shows a quieter, almost local resort.

When to watch Palmanova

Mallorca is one hour ahead of the UK all year. Mornings are usually the calmest time; in summer a sea breeze often fills in during the early afternoon. The beaches face south-east, so they keep the sun until well into the afternoon. The sea climbs to about 25 °C by August and falls to around 14 °C in late winter.

Around Palmanova

The seafront promenade runs south to Magaluf in about half an hour on foot. Puerto Portals, a marina known for its yachts and restaurants, is a couple of miles (3 to 4 km) towards Palma, and Palma itself is about 9 miles (15 km) along the motorway.

Visiting Palmanova

Palma airport is around 18 miles (29 km) away. The beaches are small and slope gently, which suits children, but they fill early in high season. Lifeguards cover the main beaches in summer; keep inside the buoyed swimming areas, because boats come close to the shore.
