Rooftops and the Puente Nuevo

Over old rooftops to the Puente Nuevo on the Quiviesa, timber-framed houses and the wooded hill behind. What you see

Potes is the small capital of Liébana, a sheltered valley on the southern side of the Picos de Europa, in Cantabria. Its stone streets sit where two rivers meet, and the grey limestone walls of the mountains rise above the rooftops, so these cameras are a quick way to see the weather in the Picos before setting out.

What you can see on the Potes webcams

From high in the town, one view runs up the valley over red-tiled roofs and a big stone church to a jagged line of peaks. Another looks across the old quarter's timber-framed houses and wooden galleries to a green hill and a bridge over the river; a third looks down on a square by the river, where café tables fill the terraces. A little further out, a camera above the valley watches the cliffs of the Picos themselves, with cloud drifting across their faces.

The Picos de Europa above Potes, looking up the valley

From high on the edge of Potes, this camera of the Camino Lebaniego foundation looks west up the valley. In the foreground are the red-tiled roofs of the town and, on the right, the stone bulk and clock of the big parish church; a tree-lined road and a car park lead out of the frame. Beyond wooded slopes and green meadows dotted with farmhouses, the grey limestone peaks of the Picos de Europa fill the skyline.

It is the camera to check before heading for Fuente Dé or a mountain walk: if the summits are sharp, the high ground is clear; if they are hidden, the cloud is down. The peaks face the morning sun and look their best early in the day.

A riverside square in the old town of Potes

Looking down from above the river, this live camera takes in one of the busiest corners of Potes: a square lined with stone houses with arcades and balconies, a road bridge on the right and, below the parapet, café terraces built out over the riverside. Behind the rooftops rise the green slopes that close the valley, with a glimpse of distant peaks on the right.

It shows how full the terraces are, whether people are out in the streets and, in winter, whether the town is wet or white. The camera faces roughly east, so on clear mornings the low sun shines into the lens and washes out the left of the picture; the view is sharper from late morning on.

Timber-framed houses and the Puente Nuevo over the Quiviesa

This camera looks south-west over the oldest part of Potes. In the foreground is a jumble of clay-tiled roofs; on the left, the Puente Nuevo carries the road over the river Quiviesa, and beyond it stand tall houses with whitewashed walls, dark timber frames and wooden galleries, the traditional building style of Liébana.

Behind the town a steep hill of oak woods, meadows and small fields climbs to a rocky crest, and on the far right a limestone peak of the Picos de Europa appears. It is the most picturesque of the Potes views: watch the autumn colour on the hillside, or, in winter, how low the snow has come.

The Picos de Europa from Cillorigo de Liébana

A camera shared on Windy from a house in Cillorigo de Liébana, the municipality just north of Potes. It looks south over a wooded hillside, with a few roofs at the bottom of the frame and the eaves of the building across the top, to the great limestone wall of the Picos de Europa.

It is the most direct view of the mountains on this page: you can see cloud catching on the ridges, the bare grey rock in bright sun and, in winter, how far down the snow reaches. Its picture is played here as a time-lapse of the day rather than as live video.

A town between two rivers

The Deva, which rises high in the Picos at Fuente Dé, meets the Quiviesa here, and the town grew around the crossing. Its symbol is the Torre del Infantado, a square 15th-century tower that now houses the town council. Much of the old town burnt during the Spanish Civil War and was rebuilt afterwards; since 1983 it has been a protected historic quarter. Liébana has a mild, almost Mediterranean microclimate, and vines and walnut trees grow at the foot of high mountains.

When to watch Potes

Potes is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. The peaks up the valley face the morning sun, so morning is the best time to see them sharp; later in the day the light comes from behind them. In October and November the valley turns gold and brown, and through the winter the cameras show how far down the snow has come on the summits.

Around Potes

The monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, a short drive up the hillside, keeps a relic believed to be the largest surviving piece of the True Cross and is the goal of the Camino Lebaniego pilgrim route. Up the valley lies Fuente Dé and its cable car into the high Picos; to the north, the road follows the narrow gorge of La Hermida towards the coast.

Getting to Potes

The nearest airport with flights from the UK is Santander, about 45 miles (72 km) to the north-east as the crow flies, though the drive is longer because the N-621 winds through the Hermida gorge. Ferries from Portsmouth, Plymouth and Rosslare also sail to Santander. Bilbao airport is further away, about 87 miles (140 km) in a straight line.
