East along the paseo and the wide beach to Algarrobo, Torrox and the Axarquía mountains. What you see

Torre del Mar is the seaside part of Vélez-Málaga, about 20 miles (33 km) east of Málaga, and a busy summer resort that is especially popular with Spanish families. Flat and spread out, it lies along a wide beach of grey sand with a long promenade, palm gardens and plenty of beach bars.

What you can see on the Torre del Mar webcam

The live camera stands on the promenade and looks east: patterned paving, palms and gardens on one side, the beach and the sea on the other, and in the distance the coast towards Algarrobo and Torrox below the mountains. The same view also comes as a 24-hour time-lapse. It shows the crowds on the sand, the state of the sea and how clearly the mountains stand out.

Torre del Mar promenade and beach webcam

This live camera is on the seafront at Torre del Mar and looks east along the promenade. On the left run the patterned paving, the palms and the gardens of the paseo; on the right, the wide beach with its sunbed areas and the sea. The view ends at the coast towards Algarrobo and Torrox, below the mountains of the Axarquía, which stand out sharply on clear days.

It is useful for judging how busy the sand and the paseo are, and for seeing the sea: a breeze shows up quickly as white horses across the bay. The picture is at its best from late morning, once the sun has moved round to the south.

Between the sea and the sierras

Behind the coast rise the sierras of Tejeda and Almijara, whose highest peaks top 2,000 metres (6,500 ft) and can carry snow in a cold winter while people sit on the beach below. The hills in between are planted with avocados and mangoes, the area's main crops after tourism. Next door, the harbour of Caleta de Vélez is home to an important fishing fleet, and the fish it lands ends up on the menus along the promenade.

When to watch Torre del Mar

Torre del Mar is on Spanish time, one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland. The camera looks east, so the picture is at its clearest from late morning, once the sun has moved round to the south. Clear winter days give the sharpest view of the mountains. Summer evenings are when the promenade is at its liveliest.

Around Torre del Mar

Vélez-Málaga, with its old quarter and castle tower, is a few miles inland. Málaga is about 20 miles to the west, and Nerja about 15 miles (25 km) to the east along the coast. Inland, the white villages of the Axarquía are scattered over the hills.

Visiting Torre del Mar

Buses run along the coast from Málaga, and the A-7 motorway passes just inland. The beach shelves gently and is lined with sunbed areas in summer, while the flat promenade makes for an easy walk or cycle along the seafront.
