What you can see on the San Antonio webcam
From high on a hotel in the town centre, the camera looks west over the white blocks of the West End to the open bay. The islands that close the horizon lie low and dark on the water, sailing boats sit at anchor, and on the right the far side of the bay curves away with its line of hotels. Most of the picture is sky and sea, so it is a reliable way to check the cloud, the colour of the water and whether white horses are running across the bay.
San Antonio bay from a hotel rooftop
From high on a hotel in the centre of San Antonio, this camera looks west over the white apartment blocks of the West End to the bay. The islands off the bay mouth sit low on the horizon, sailing boats ride at anchor, and on the right the far shore curves away with its line of hotels and a rocky headland.
Live video with the hotel's clock in the corner, it is the camera to watch in the evening: the bay faces west, so the sun sets over the water ahead. By day it shows the colour of the sea, the cloud and whether white horses are running across the bay.
A bay made for sunsets
The Romans called the bay Portus Magnus, the great harbour, and for centuries it sheltered a small fishing village. Hotels arrived from the late 1950s, and the town spread right round the bay. Because the coast faces west, evenings here are about the sunset: the rocks and terraces of the sunset strip fill up as the sun drops towards the islands, and near the harbour a giant egg sculpture recalls the local claim that Christopher Columbus was born on Ibiza.
When to watch San Antonio
Ibiza is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland, so a 9pm sunset in Sant Antoni is 8pm at home. In midsummer the sun sets well to the north-west; in winter it goes down further south, over the open sea. Mornings are usually the calmest, with the bay often flat before the afternoon breeze. The camera is especially good in the hour before sunset, when the sky over the islands changes colour.
Around San Antonio
Cala Comte, with its turquoise water and islets, is about 6 miles (10 km) west. Cala Bassa and Cala Gració are closer, and in summer boats leave the harbour for beaches around the bay. The quiet villages of Santa Agnès and Sant Mateu lie inland to the north.
Visiting San Antonio
Ibiza airport is about 8 miles (13 km) away as the crow flies. The harbourside promenade, Passeig de ses Fonts, links the town centre with the sunset strip on foot. The bay beaches are shallow and sheltered, while the rocky coves beyond the town feel the wind more.
